How Do I Recover My Data?

In this post I've been asked by 3 separate people about how to get back back - my advice is to go to a data recovery firm. You can expect to pay around about £500.

I have a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB external harddrive, and it's become corrupted! I'm not sure how – I haven't dropped it, though I do carry it around a lot so it's possible to got knocked in transit. I have a lot of data on there I would like to recover – could you let me know how much this would cost, and how long it would take?

I have Toshiba external drive STORE.E PARTNER. I have not used this drive for about 2 months but today when I connected it to my laptop I just get a message on screen that usb device cannot be recognized. I tried to connect with another cable ( I have second hard drive which works on these cables )and to another computer but the drive is not working. It seems that there is a problem with power- blue light is not showing and it is not making any noise. Are you able to recover date from this disk or repair it.

Seagate external hard drive not recognised by any computer when plugged in. It also has a flashing blue light when plugged in but will not show up on pc, also can hear ticking noise, not knowing dropped, last used when transferring large amounts of data across from old pc laptop that we no longer have

I have an external Samsung hard drive. When I plug it in with windows, I cannot see it under windows. When plug in it makes a small noise for 30s then do nothing.

My external drive has stopped working. I am not sure what the problem is. The outside looks damaged and when I plug it in it makes a odd noise and the PC and Mac don't recognise it at all. It would be great to hear from you whether there's a chance to recover files from it. Would you be able to give me an estimate of how much would it cost?

Water Structuring App needs data

In this post I'm looking at something a little out of the ordinary - I'm looking at pulling the data from a hard drive that hosted a vibrational water structuring program called H2O - http://h2oapp.online/. Now if you are wondering what water structuring is, it's all to do with frequency and vibration - you can learn more about water structuring and the natural cycle of water at http://naqwa.com/community/articles/water-structuring/

H2O water structuring app

The hard drive in question contained a lot of frequencies that are used in sound healing. It turns out that there are frequencies for most things and all that is required is for us to resonate at that frequency. For example, an opera singer can shatter a wine glass by singing at a precise frequency, similarly bugs can be killed by exact frequencies and a state of euphoria can be induced by another. It's all very interesting.

Anyway, the hard drive had fallen into some water and was not longer turning or vibrating. Fortunately no water had got inside the internal mechanics of the hard drive. To get the data off the hard drive it was a case of matching the controller board to one of a similar sound frequency (mixed metaphors there). This was achieved and the valuable water structuring information was retrieved from the hard drive. It's now being put to use putting frequencies, vibration and intention into water.

It's not often that something completely new comes along, but this is one of those things. I feel it's time to broaden my horizons and look further at the H2O water structuring app. My chakras could always do with balancing and I notice there is a custom database in the app to that contains specialised frequencies for achieving certain results - eg. a healthy mind, a general detoxification, as well as several water structuring frequencies. I think I'll head over to the app store now - I know the H2O web site has the download links on it too.

CCTV footage required

I have a swan cctv camera that records for 30 days, I have phoned swan to trace back to 28/05/17 . But it has exceded the 30 day period, I was wondering if you would be able to retrieve the date in question. I have a Western Digital WD5000AAKB. Unfortunately there a plastic piece that separates the individual discs has broken. Please can you confirm if this is a part that you could assist in supplying?

swann cctv system

I have a Freecom external hard drive running CCTV system that I bought in about 2006. It's been sitting in a cupboard for the past 5 years. Since 2012 I've stored everything on dropbox. But this harddrive has 6 years of photos on it. I recently powered it on, and it doesn't sound like the disk is spinning like it used to, and the power light on the front is flashing. I'd like to see if I could get this recovered.

Hard drive in Seagate Back up Plus 2TB portable drive. First Prob: Not recognised in USB3. port Second Prob: Gets very hot Third Prob. Started making whirring noise then clicking noise, then silent! Now removed from caddy and have bare 2TB drive. Drive not dishantled or has any physical damage.

CCTV footage is needed from 2/6/17 from 22.30pm to midnight. When I went to make a copy of this footage, it didn't show up even though I had seen it before. I tried different dates and I could see footage from the 9th onwards but nothing before that even though I had seen footage from before that preiviously.

Scratching noise, then crashed, no can no longer boot from hard drive. It tried to repair itself once. Has been plugged into another laptop and although it recognizes the hard drive, it can not read any data on it. I am a school teacher and my external hard drive has stopped working. The IT technicians have checked it and said that the hard drive is broken but the information on it should be retrievable.

CCTV data recovery requires specific CODECs in order to recover and play the files. My advice is to go to the manufacturers web site and check which CODECs their hardware uses.

Critical Data Lost!

The raid array in the server reported 2 failed drives so we lost a VMware data store. The disks came backup but the vmdk file is corrupt (although vmware tools don't report it as faulty). On the advice of our support company we have replaced a single drive and are waiting for the raid array to rebuild however that may not help. We also have a backup of the faulty vmdk. There is approx 450Gb of data which is critical to us. What can we/you do next?

I managed to delete all my files and recycle bin from an ADVENT laptop so that I could take to get laptop hinge repaired, hinge cannot be repaired and turns out I did not copy my stuff to USB properly. Need to recover, photos, excel sheets, word docs, vmdk and email pst history

Its a Seagate 1tb hard drive Model SRD00F1 that has a blue light blinking when plugged in but stopped showing upon the computer altogether a couple of weeks ago. I've VMDK files and the VMWare partition seems corrupt. I've bought a new cable, which made no difference. It doesn't appear in disk utility or any other way on my Mac and I have tried to see it on another Mac with no success. It contains my entire work portfolio and all my photos from the past few years. Computers do not recognise the external hard drive.

Spilt some blue liquid from a dehumidifier on my laptop and now cant retrieve the VM Ware data off the hard-drive.
PCB board seems damaged. Tried ordering a new pcb board but cant find the exact match so ordered a similar one that doesnt work. Got suggested to solder off the rom from the broken one onto the new PCB board but not sure whether that would work.

I have an issue with my unrooted vmdk LG G2 D802 32GB Korean version. I updated the software using LG Software Updater and everything went fine (download and update process) until first reboot after update. After the phone turned on the following message was displayed on the screen: 'Unfortunately, settings has stopped' and nothing happened after. After every another reboot the situation is the same.
I am unable to start my phone in recovery mode (I also didn't do the backup thinking it will be only a simple software update without any issues). The only mode I can start my phone in is hard reset mode which I want to avoid.
I was wondering if you are able to fix my phone without any data loss or to recover the data especially photos if the fix without hard reset is impossible.

Hard Drive Help

computer science labsHi Everyone, the following questions came in via the web site and represent typical hard drive problems that many of us experience. If you are unable to recover the data yourself, data recovery sites like http://computersciencelabs.com/ provide data recovery services across the UK.

I have a Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green drive where the pcb has been damaged. I already have a replacement pcb but understand that the chip on the old pcb needs to be transferred onto the replacement pcb. The pcb does not have a u12 chip but does have the Marvell controller chip which I believe is the chip that needs to be transferred. Are you able to transfer the chip across and what price would you charge?

Western Digital My Passport 1TB external drive powers up and light comes on. It sounds like everything is spinning OK and I can see the disk drive in the Device Manager but it won't show up in Windows Explorer. If I run the WD diagnostics it sees the disk but fails. In Disk Management it shows the disk but can't initialise it due to an I/O device error. I would like to recover the data off the disk if possible. I'm not bothered about getting the disk working again if I can just get the data back.

Drive whirrs, clicks twice , repeats several times and isn't accessible. Got black screen of death, Windows won't load. Can't access system at all and wrongly thought data backed up in Dropbox. Think I'm on Windows 7. Really need to get this data back. Had guy out from a call-out company and all he could offer was to restart Windows but lose all data. Do you think you can retrieve my data or should I just give up?

I need all photos recovered from a Galaxy S3. Can you assist?

Touro Mobile USB 3.0 500 GB/Go External Harddrive. My external harddrive seems to have a dodgy connection – it will momentarily pair to the computer but then stops. Is there anything you can do to recover the files from it?

Does there anyone who can help me with my Lacie 5big network 2 please? My Lacie has been desynchronized. Its showing red light… My external portable hard drive suddenly stopped being found by my laptop. I searched for it on drive manager. Found it and tried to re-initialise it but came back with an I/O error. It has a lot of data on it (mostly music). Any suggestions? How much would recovery cost?

In all theses cases data recovery cost vary between £500 and £2000, so obviously your data has got to be worth that amount to you.

London Hard Drive Recovery

Hard drive recovery in London is in demand at the moment with the number of computer disk drives and mobile phones that are losing their data for one reason or another:

2 x Samsung HD spin but dont connect. One is intermittently connecting but one seems fully dead. Lighs are on but nothing else. All I want is the data from them, then they can be binned.

computer store londonI've been trying to get my old IDE hard drive to work on my new PATA drive PC so I can back data up from a computer I owned a number of years ago. Bought an IDE usb hub and whilst attempting to access the drive has been making ticking sounds and not being recognised by Windows. Opened HDD case using a clean air filter for no more than 30 seconds, and the head is stuck which confirmed my suspicions. Please could you provide me with a quote for data recovery? I'm currently being quoted £350 – £650, which unfortunately is too much for me financially. Could you confirm whether this is the going rate for recovery of this model of HDD? I was hoping it would be £150 – £200 max to be honest. Thanks in advance.

I have a Samsung 840 (p/n MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1) which suddenly stop functioning. The SSD is not recognised by the laptop at all. What I am looking for is a quote for recovering the data.

Connection point between external hard drive and USB cable has failed. Contains personal copies of technical engineering data. Would like to recover all the data if possible. Hard drive : Seagate expansion portable drive Model SRD00F1 I am currently out of the country but will be in London on 14/3/17 so can come with drive to your Data Clinic centre there on 15/3/17 if it is possible to transfer the information.

I am currently abroad in Cyprus and wanted to know if it was possible to send you a failed laptop drive for recovery. I believe it was from the Lenovo usb power plug being forced into the usb port of the laptop which caused it to short circuit. I just wanted to know if this would be an option for me and also what would be the expected cost if a successful recovery was possible. Please let me know if we could arrange something.

I have just moved house and an old external hard drive has just stopped working/packed in and I wanted to recover the data and place it on a new passport drive. Would like to know what the chances are of recovering the data and costs?

I have a 2tb HDD from a WD MyBook Live that suddenly decided it would no longer boot. I removed the drive from it's enclosure and tried to mount it on a Linux machine, which reported a bad superblock on the partition with the data on it.

Hi, basically I have a hard disk and live near to London, one of the chips on the bottom of the drive has blown, i have purchased another pcb from ebay. All i need is the bios chip moving from the old pcb to the new, then i believe it would work so i can retrieve my data. is this something you could help me with

Hard Disk Help

In this, my first post of 2017 I'd like to thank the UK blogsite Recover Deleted Data for being kind enough to offer assistance with the following data recovery and hard drive help and advice I provided. I've included links where appropriate to further useful information.

WD Scorpio hard driveMy colleague has an NTFS formatted 2TB WD Elements USB hard drive that he dropped.
Since the drop, the drive is not usable. It can be seen in windows device manager correctly and also is seen as a device in Linux however cannot be mounted and the smart details show a high reallocated sector count.
There's no nasty noises coming from it and it seems to spin up happily when connected it just won't mount for whatever reason.
He'd really like to get the data off it, is this something that you think you'll be able to provide?
I understand that you can't guarantee it, however an idea of if it's possible and a price would be appreciated.

The harddrive spins and powers up fine but no data can be read and is not detected in the system bios. I have tried on two different machines. I can hear a slight click in the drive and my father in law did move the machine whilst running so may have knocked something out of place slightly. none of the data is backed up. .

Drive started clicking rapidly and the read speed reduced and driven started hanging. I ran a surface scan which showed some bad blocks around 200, then after a reboot the drive won't mount or show up at all. it is a seagate barracuda 3TB formatted hfs+ and i have a 3tb replacement drive ready

I have the hard drive from an old dell laptop that i would like to access.
i've just come from maplin today and they dont have an readers i could purchase.
would you be able to either recommend a product or help me to get the info from the drive.
here is the spec;

Phone Help Manchester

Phones and hard drives are always breaking a requiring data recovery and here are a few enquiries from people with very similar problems. I recommend http://phone-recovery.pen.io/ for phone and hard drive recovery. They also have an office in Manchester. HTC one m9 water damaged. Won't turn on, took to an ismash they said they can't repair, however I don't think they had the capability to rwtrive the photos stored on there. There's no SD and I had a few months where I didn't back up, so I need to retrieve photos from the phone. Is this possible if we pull it apart and get the phone memory out? I mistakenly deleted the DCIM/Camera folder on my phone (Nexus 5) this evening and would like to recover the photos again if possible please. I can bring the phone in tomorrow morning (Wednesday). Please can you let me know if you can help. Thanks I have a relatively old external hard drive (from 2011) which I haven't used for a year. When I tried to connect it recently, I realised that the connecting point for the cable might be broken and my laptop would not recognise the external drive. Could you please kindly let me know where should I send my drive for pickup? Hard drive has failed, unable to access, require all data recoved from the drive. I can bring to Manchester I have a Sony Experia X compact and I dropped on the floor now I can not turn it back on. The screen is cracked and not usable, I need the photos recovered on this phone because I have no backup and was wondering how much it would cost and how long it would take. Spilled water on a 2015 MacBook Pro – and it won't switch on. Tried drying it out, but to no success. Hadn't backed it up recently, so I need to get work data from it.

Hard Drive Anecdotes

Broken hard disk driveBecause I work in data recovery I'm bound to see a lot of broken hard drives. In this post I write about some of the cases I've dealt with recently and provide interesting anecdotes where appropriate.

Case 1. The hard drive was attached to a NAS and the NAS stopped working. If the drive is attached to the NAS it won't start. I took the drive out of the NAS and plugged to the laptop using a USB-SATA cable but Windows can't see it. No noise, nothing on Windows. Can the data be recovered? How much would it cost?

NAS stands for Network Attached Storage and on multi disk system implies that some sort of RAID technology is in operation (read more about NAS at http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/tech-insights/what-is-nas-master-ti/). It'll be RAID 1 for 2 disk NAS hard drives and RAID 5 for anything above that. The drive appears dead (no noise, and nothing on Windows), therefore it's probably an electrical fault and the data should be recoverable. The cost will be about £450.

Case 2. I have a 1TB external Seagate drive which I was using as a Mac Time Machine backup (see Vital time machine backup notes at http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/complete-guide-time-machine-mac-backup-3626572/) and has a large archive of family photos on it. While trying to restore to my Mac it started to malfunction, running slow and crashing the Mac. It is still live and I can mount it and see the root directories but can't copy anything off it. Can you assist and what are your rates?

I believe your hard drive has media degradation. The data on it should be recoverable, but you're going to have to send it to a hard drive recovery company. Take a look at a good data recovery web blog like http://www.recover-deleted-data.co.uk/ for good recommendations on hard drive data recovery companies.

Case 3. My Seagate external hard drive isn't being recognised in any computer. I have contacted seagate and tried all their suggestions but still no luck. I have to send it back to them to get a new one as its still in warranty but would like all the data taken off if possible, they do do data recovery but its not covered in warranty and its more than i would like to pay! If you could let me know a rough price that would be great, thank you.

It really does depend on what's wrong with you hard drive. You don't provide any symptoms so it's difficult to give an accurate diagnosis of the problem. In cases like this the best I can do is provide you with a guide price for the recovery which will be somewhere between £350 and £800.

So I hope these anecdotes will provide some insight in to the world of hard disk recovery. Please let me know if you have any questions.

HDDs are Not Responsive

There are many examples of when a quality hard drive recovery service can be used to retrieve information off of unresponsive computer hard drives (HDD's). Here are some examples:

  • I have a Toshiba 6GB storage device that I dropped recently, it now does not respond when connected into the USB port of my I Mac laptop. It gives me a continuous flashing indicator light (Blue) with an electronic audible signal. The memory used at present is probably only not even 5% of the capacity, and it contains mainly documents and photographs. Is it possible to advise at this point what the cost may be to retrieve the data?
  • system volume error messageWe have has a hard drive fail and will not read on any of our docks. we are looking to recover all the files upon the disk.
  • My Toshiba Z930 has started to boot up and the system repair window opens. The root cause it has identified is "system volume is corrupt". It then restarts and then delivers the same screen again
  • I have a seagate network drive that has (had) all my families photos and home movies on. The drive started being quite noisy so turned on and off again. Now when I access the drive it is saying it is blank.
  • I have 2 toshiba external hard drives (not SSD) that have failed and this is likely to be impact damage (dropped on floor, from desk height). I can drop the drives off to the London (City) location – before I do this are you able to provide some form of estimate on these, and is this a no fix / no fee option? Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.
  • WD 1TB Passport external usb 3.0 HDD. Drive powers up when plugged into the PC. Continuous clicking noise and no longer being recognised the PC. Has about 300Gb of files which need recovering.

Remember you need to choose a good data recovery service to recover information from non responsive hard drives - look at reviews and ask for advice when choosing.
