Latest data recovery questions

Hi there. In this post I'd like to thank the people at the Data Recovery Tips web site (http://data-recovery-tips.co.uk/) for letting me talk about various hard drive recovery enquiries they've received.

My daughter is in Australia and has just accidentally reformatted her external hard drive. She had it connected to TV to record something. She thought it was her boyfriend's connected. It said Not compatible and asked if she wanted to reformat so she said Yes. Is all lost? She is actually having a complete panic attack on the other side of the world because all of her travel photos are on it and she is in bits. Can you help?

busted hard drive

We have a failed drive on one of our laptops it holds important information, ive tried accessing it several ways to extract the information but nothing detects the drive at all could you please give me a price for recovery

Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1Gb 2 year old son knocked off it off table onto carpeted floor. Assumed it would be OK – plugged it into Linux on laptop – hd led light on and then started beeping – 3 beeps, 3 beeps and 9 beeps for a couple of minutes and stops, activity light stays on. lsusb command on Linux sees hard drive but it can't be mounted. HD has wedding photos on and large film archive I'd like to recover. Approx – 500Gb used.

My 500GB sold state WD external HD dosn't show up anymore on my Mac desktop. I would like to know how would it cost to repair.

When i plug the hard drive into my laptop it does not connect. I can hear the disc inside the device turning within the drive itself the device is the Seagate Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 inch External Hard Drive.

I plugged my external hard drive into a new laptop and accidentally deleted all files.

We appear to have a failed HDU from a users laptop and we require some email archive's recovering from it please if possible.

Samsung 128gb micro sdxc card seems completely dead. I've tried it in a few machines and it's not recognised by any of them.

The Harddrive is click when powered up8rpn. Not decteding and scratches on platter

I have a 2TB Expansion Portable hard drive from Seagate. Several months ago the port on the drive came loose, so I superglued it so that it was no longer loose. This was fine until a couple of weeks ago when it came loose again and so I superglued it again. Unfortunately I think I have superglued it incorrectly as I can no longer connect it to my laptop and neither my laptop nor the hard drive register that it has been plugged in. Please help me :(

It's Western Digital Question Time

Lately I've had a lot of faulty Western Digital hard drives to deal with. Some people are wanting them repaired, others are wanting the data taking off of them. Here are some of the enquiries:

I own a WD Passport external hard drive (1TB) which has stopped appearing on laptop so I am unable to access my files. It appears on 'open devices' on the laptop and the files are accessible when I plug it into my tv. When plugged into my laptop I hear a faint clicking sound. How much would it cost to recover my files?

Is it possible to get a budget quote to recover the data from a failed Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 laptop HDD please? The drive makes a mechanical clicking noise on power up and does not register as an accessible device from the OS.

Western Digital MyPassport external hard drive has started clicking, and does not show up on my computer. It is formatted to a Mac.

My Passport Ultra 2TB (bought 25/10/2016) has stopped working, when I unplug-plug it starts, lights on, spins, but beeps 7 times, pause, 3 times, pause, 3 times and stops, sometimes in loops (7-3-3). After a few research, I assumed the problem is from the hardware. It didn't dropped, it is always safely connected as a backup disc, I had to carry it with me several times, always in safe conditions. First, I would like to know if I can do something about it on my own first or extract the datas with you without breaking the warranty, as you do not appear an the official WD's list.

The HD can't be opened from any device.

Drive spins up but is not recognised by BIOS or by Windows. Possible controller issue? If possible would like it repaired, but if not the photos and documents in the user area are my priority. 2TB Seagate Barracuda, DOM 07/12

I have an encrypted hard drive that is not allowing me to access my files. typically, when I plug in the Seagate external hard drive, a message pops up and asks for my password. Now, when I plug it it, I do not get a prompt for a password. I can see my folders and files, but when I try to access them, I get a message that says I do not have access. It has not been dropped/ damaged. I really need to access the data! Hope this is something you can deal with.

Hard Drive Anecdotes

Broken hard disk driveBecause I work in data recovery I'm bound to see a lot of broken hard drives. In this post I write about some of the cases I've dealt with recently and provide interesting anecdotes where appropriate.

Case 1. The hard drive was attached to a NAS and the NAS stopped working. If the drive is attached to the NAS it won't start. I took the drive out of the NAS and plugged to the laptop using a USB-SATA cable but Windows can't see it. No noise, nothing on Windows. Can the data be recovered? How much would it cost?

NAS stands for Network Attached Storage and on multi disk system implies that some sort of RAID technology is in operation (read more about NAS at http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/tech-insights/what-is-nas-master-ti/). It'll be RAID 1 for 2 disk NAS hard drives and RAID 5 for anything above that. The drive appears dead (no noise, and nothing on Windows), therefore it's probably an electrical fault and the data should be recoverable. The cost will be about £450.

Case 2. I have a 1TB external Seagate drive which I was using as a Mac Time Machine backup (see Vital time machine backup notes at http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/complete-guide-time-machine-mac-backup-3626572/) and has a large archive of family photos on it. While trying to restore to my Mac it started to malfunction, running slow and crashing the Mac. It is still live and I can mount it and see the root directories but can't copy anything off it. Can you assist and what are your rates?

I believe your hard drive has media degradation. The data on it should be recoverable, but you're going to have to send it to a hard drive recovery company. Take a look at a good data recovery web blog like http://www.recover-deleted-data.co.uk/ for good recommendations on hard drive data recovery companies.

Case 3. My Seagate external hard drive isn't being recognised in any computer. I have contacted seagate and tried all their suggestions but still no luck. I have to send it back to them to get a new one as its still in warranty but would like all the data taken off if possible, they do do data recovery but its not covered in warranty and its more than i would like to pay! If you could let me know a rough price that would be great, thank you.

It really does depend on what's wrong with you hard drive. You don't provide any symptoms so it's difficult to give an accurate diagnosis of the problem. In cases like this the best I can do is provide you with a guide price for the recovery which will be somewhere between £350 and £800.

So I hope these anecdotes will provide some insight in to the world of hard disk recovery. Please let me know if you have any questions.
